Knocked-out adult tooth: first aid
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is put back quickly. Based on healthdirect advice:
- Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
- If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. Do not scrub it.
- If you can, gently push it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
- If that is not possible, keep the tooth in milk or in the cheek of the mouth (adults only).

- Never put a baby tooth back in. Bring your child in so we can check the area.
When to go to hospital instead
Some situations need a hospital emergency department or triple zero (000) rather than a dental clinic. Go to hospital or call 000 if you have:

- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure
- A serious facial injury, possible jaw fracture or head injury
