Sedation Options for Anxious Patients
If dental visits make you anxious, you are not alone. We offer local anaesthetic, IV (twilight) sedation and general anaesthetic, matched to your health and the treatment you need.

Which option suits you depends on your level of anxiety, the treatment planned and your medical history.
Local Anaesthetic
An injection that numbs the tooth and surrounding area while you stay fully awake. It is used for most dental treatment, and alongside sedation.
IV Sedation (Twilight Sedation)
Sedative medicine given through a small cannula by an appropriately trained and endorsed practitioner. You are deeply relaxed but able to respond, and most people remember little afterwards.
General Anaesthetic (GA)
You are fully asleep and unaware of treatment. It is given and monitored by a medical anaesthetist and may be recommended for extensive or complex surgery.
Who Sedation Dentistry Can Help
Sedation, sometimes called sleep dentistry, may be worth discussing if any of these apply to you.
Dental Anxiety
You feel anxious, fearful or panicky about dental treatment, or have avoided the dentist for years.
Strong Gag Reflex
A sensitive gag reflex makes treatment difficult to tolerate.
Longer Procedures
You need a longer or more complex procedure, such as wisdom teeth removal or dental implants.
What to Expect
A clear, step-by-step approach so you know what is happening and why.
Consultation
We talk through your concerns and review your health, medicines and the treatment needed.
Sedation Plan
We explain which option is suitable, the risks that apply to you, and any fasting and escort instructions.
Treatment
Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area. Your breathing, pulse and oxygen level are monitored throughout IV sedation and general anaesthetic.
Recovery
After IV sedation or a general anaesthetic you must not drive, work or sign legal documents for the rest of the day, and an adult should take you home and stay with you.
Risks, Suitability and Cost
Sedation is not suitable for everyone. Possible effects include drowsiness, nausea, dizziness and, less commonly, breathing or allergic reactions. Pregnancy, some heart and lung conditions, sleep apnoea and certain medicines can affect which option is appropriate.
The fee depends on the type of sedation and the length of the appointment, and is quoted in writing before treatment. Some health funds contribute to sedation, so check your level of cover. See our dental costs and fees page, or read our practical tips for dental anxiety if you are unsure whether you need sedation.
