How Wisdom Teeth Are Assessed
We examine your mouth and take a panoramic X-ray to see the position of each wisdom tooth, how much room it has, and how close the roots of the lower teeth sit to the nerve in the jaw. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Teeth that are fully through, healthy and easy to clean are usually left alone and monitored.
If a tooth is deeply impacted or very close to the nerve, we may recommend a 3D scan or referral to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Local Anaesthetic, IV Sedation or General Anaesthetic
Straightforward removals are done under local anaesthetic, which numbs the area while you stay awake. For more difficult teeth, several teeth at once, or patients who are anxious, IV (twilight) sedation or a general anaesthetic may be suitable. See sedation dentistry in Glenmore Park for how each option works.
Recovery, Aftercare and Risks
Most people have swelling and discomfort for three to five days, and return to normal activities within a week. Our guide to tooth extraction aftercare covers what to do at home, and signs you may need your wisdom teeth out explains the common symptoms.
Risks include pain, swelling, bleeding, infection, dry socket and, uncommonly, temporary or permanent numbness of the lip, chin or tongue. We explain the risks that apply to you before you decide.
