A Fixed Way to Replace Missing Teeth
A dental bridge fills the space left by one or more missing teeth with a false tooth that is fixed to the teeth beside the gap. It stays in place and is not removed for cleaning.

The right design depends on where the gap is and the condition of the teeth beside it.
Conventional Bridge
Crowns on the teeth either side of the gap hold a false tooth between them.
Cantilever Bridge
The false tooth is supported from one side only, where the bite allows it.
Bonded Bridge
A false tooth with a wing bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth, with minimal preparation.
Implant-Supported Bridge
Two or more implants support a bridge when several teeth are missing.
How a Bridge Is Made
At the first visit the supporting teeth are prepared, impressions or digital scans are taken, and a temporary bridge is fitted. The bridge is made in a dental laboratory and fitted at a second visit about two weeks later, when we check the fit, bite and colour before cementing it.
Bridge, Implant or Denture?
A bridge is fixed and usually quicker than an implant, but it relies on the neighbouring teeth, which need to be prepared. A dental implant replaces the tooth without involving the teeth beside it, and needs enough healthy bone and a longer treatment time. Dentures are removable and usually the lowest-cost option. Our article comparing implants, bridges and dentures goes through the differences, and dental crowns explains how the supporting teeth are restored.
Caring for a Bridge
Clean under the false tooth every day with floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser, as plaque collects there. Decay or gum disease around the supporting teeth is the most common reason a bridge fails. With good care and regular check-ups, many bridges last ten years or more, though this varies between people.
