Most babies get their first tooth at around six months, although anywhere from four to ten months is normal. By about three years of age most children have all 20 baby teeth.
Teething timeline
- 6 to 10 months: lower front teeth.
- 8 to 12 months: upper front teeth.
- 9 to 16 months: the teeth either side of the front teeth.
- 13 to 19 months: first molars.
- 16 to 23 months: canines.
- 23 to 33 months: second molars.
The order and timing vary between children. A tooth arriving a few months early or late is rarely a concern.
Signs of teething
- More dribbling than usual.
- Chewing on fingers and toys.
- Red, swollen gums where a tooth is coming through.
- Being unsettled, especially at night.
- A flushed cheek.
Teething does not cause a high fever, diarrhoea or a rash on the body. If your baby has these symptoms or seems unwell, see your doctor.
Safe ways to soothe sore gums
- Rub the gum gently with a clean finger.
- Offer a chilled, not frozen, teething ring.
- Give a clean, cold, wet washcloth to chew on.
- Wipe dribble away often to prevent a rash on the chin.
Amber teething necklaces are a choking and strangulation risk and are not recommended. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before using teething gels or pain medicine, as some products are not suitable for babies.
Looking after new teeth
- Clean teeth twice a day from the first tooth, with a soft cloth or a small soft toothbrush and water.
- From 18 months, use a pea-sized amount of low-fluoride children’s toothpaste, unless your dentist advises otherwise.
- Do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk, formula or juice.
