Parents often ask us when is the right time to think about braces. There is no single age that suits every child, but there are clear signs to watch for and good reasons to have your child’s bite checked early.

Key points

  • Most children who need braces start treatment between about 9 and 14, once most adult teeth are through.
  • An early bite check around age 7 can spot problems while the jaw is still growing.
  • Crowding, crossbites, protruding front teeth and thumb-sucking are common reasons for assessment.
  • Not every child needs braces, and the right timing differs for each child.

What age can kids get braces?

Most children who need braces start treatment between about 9 and 14 years of age. By then most of the adult teeth have come through and the jaw is still growing, which can make teeth easier to move. Some children are ready a little earlier or later, depending on how their teeth develop.

Why an early bite check around age 7 helps

The Australian Dental Association encourages regular check-ups from an early age. Around age 7, the first adult molars and front teeth are usually through, so a dentist can see how the bite is developing. Some problems, such as a crossbite or a narrow upper jaw, can be easier to guide while a child is still growing. In many cases, an early check simply confirms that nothing needs to happen yet.

Signs your child may need an orthodontic assessment

  • Crowded, overlapping or crooked teeth.
  • Front teeth that stick out or do not meet when biting.
  • Upper teeth that sit behind the lower teeth (a crossbite or underbite).
  • Baby teeth lost very early or very late.
  • Ongoing thumb or finger sucking after about age 5.
  • Mouth breathing, snoring or difficulty chewing.

Braces or clear aligners for kids and teens?

Fixed braces are often used for children and younger teens, especially for more complex bites. For suitable teenagers who will wear them as directed, clear aligners can be an option. The right choice depends on the bite, age and how reliably aligners will be worn. If specialist orthodontic care is needed, we will refer you.

How to look after teeth during treatment

Good brushing and cleaning between teeth are especially important with braces, because plaque collects around brackets. Our guide on what you can eat with braces covers food and snacks. Regular check-ups continue during treatment.

Help with costs

Eligible children may be able to use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for check-ups and some general dental care, though it does not cover orthodontic treatment. Our children’s dentistry team can check your child’s teeth and bite and talk you through next steps.

Common questions

Can kids get braces before all their adult teeth are through?

Sometimes. Some bite problems are treated in two phases: a shorter early phase while baby teeth remain, then braces later if needed. Many children only need one phase of treatment.

Do baby teeth matter if they will fall out?

Yes. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth. Losing them early to decay can lead to crowding later, so keep up regular check-ups.

How long do braces take for kids?

It varies with the bite and the type of treatment. Your dentist or orthodontist will give you an estimate after an assessment.
