Repair Chips and Close Small Gaps
Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin, shaped and polished on the tooth, to repair chips, close small gaps and even out edges. It is usually done in one visit.

Bonding suits small to moderate changes to the shape of a tooth.
Chipped or Worn Edges
Rebuilds a chipped corner or a worn biting edge.
Small Gaps
Closes small spaces between front teeth.
Uneven Shape
Evens out teeth that are slightly short, narrow or irregular.
Discoloured Areas
Covers marks that do not respond to whitening.
The Bonding Appointment
The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly prepared, usually with little or no drilling and often without anaesthetic. Resin matched to your tooth colour is applied in layers, shaped, set with a curing light and polished. One tooth typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
If you plan to whiten your teeth, do it first. Composite does not change colour with teeth whitening, so the resin is matched to the shade you finish with.
Bonding or Veneers?
Bonding is quicker, lower in cost and removes little or no enamel, and it can be repaired if it chips. It is less stain-resistant than porcelain and usually needs polishing or replacement after some years. Porcelain veneers last longer and resist staining, but need more preparation and are not reversible. Crooked teeth may be better treated with clear aligners. We explain which option suits your teeth at a cosmetic dentistry consultation.
Care and How Long It Lasts
How long bonding lasts varies with your bite, habits and care. Avoid biting nails, pens and ice, wear a mouthguard for contact sport, and keep up regular check-ups so the surface can be polished. Results vary between people.
